Hi8 · MiniDV · 1989–1995
The 90s camcorder,
back in your pocket.
Hi8 was the vacation upgrade. MiniDV was the first digital tape. HomeMovieCam recreates both live on iPhone, so your footage looks like it came out of a camcorder bag from 1997.
The look
Two 90s camcorder looks
Recorded live by the same engine that renders the viewfinder, so what you see is what you save.
- Hi8. Cleaner and more colorful than VHS, with gentle analog texture and a mild warmth.
- MiniDV. Cool, crisp, and sharp, with the occasional digital hiccup of early digital tape.
- Camera personalities. Pair either format with the Budget Camcorder, Family Handycam, or Professional DV camera model.
- Camcorder overlays. Timecode, battery, tape counter, and a date stamp you can set to any day.
- Real camcorder habits. Pinch to zoom with camcorder-style stops, tap to focus, and record in portrait or landscape.
How it works
Three steps. No editing.
- 01Open HomeMovieCam. It opens straight into the camcorder viewfinder.
- 02Pick Hi8 in Settings. Choose a camera model and set the date stamp if you like.
- 03Press record. The scene lands on the tape you have loaded, ready to play back or share.

FAQ
90s camcorder questions.
More answers on the Support page.
What is the difference between Hi8 and MiniDV in the app?
Hi8 is analog tape: warmer, softer, and colorful. MiniDV is digital tape: cooler and sharper, with small digital artifacts. Both are recorded live.
Can I get the 90s camcorder effect on old videos?
HomeMovieCam is a camera, not an editor. You record new scenes through the 90s camcorder look, and the saved video matches the viewfinder.
Where do my 90s camcorder clips go?
Every scene lands on a digital tape you name inside the app. You can play the whole tape back, share it as one movie, and optionally copy scenes to Photos.
